THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Dear all

We would like to thank everyone in the parish for supporting our fundraising efforts for the Church Building Fund in 2013 - either by baking cakes, donating items for fundraising or by giving anonymous donations. To those who help to organise and coordinate events and those who attend and support them - without you it wouldn't happen!

Wishing you all a Peaceful and joyful Christmas!

ST FELIX CHRISTMAS DRAW 2013

Dear all

I am sure you will be delighted to learn that the superb effort by everyone involved in the above fund raising exercise, raised a magnificient £814, after deducting the printing costs and cash prizes from the sale of tickets. Due to your marvellous response to the request for contents for the hamper, this year, we didn't have to spend a penny on any items for what turned out to be a very handsome hamper. In fact, you donated so many items that the prize list ran to 32 items - certainly the longest list to date. In addition, we made more money this year than last!

So a very big THANK YOU to each and every one who contributed to this excellent result.

I contacted all but 2 prize winners by phone so if you are a winner and will be at church on Saturday or Sunday, please check with the person at the back of the church after Mass for your prize. There are two winners who had no telephone number on their ticket stub so I shall be writing to them.

Thank you again and God bless you

A Thought for Those less Fortunate

This week our government informs us that our economy is blooming and that we are on the way to recovery and so we have hope for the future. May I ask you to consider those without hope like the Bishop Rodrigues of Hyderabad who has contacted Fr. Michael asking if we could possibly help with a donation to help him build or mend broken pipes to supply clean water for his diocesan poor? Thousands of babies and young children die before the age of five because of a lack of clean drinking water, not to mention proper sanitation and vaccination programmes. I wonder if we could forego one glass of wine or a special treat over this Christmas season so these poor children can have a glass of clean water next year.

We hope to hold a collection next weekend 7th/8th December for this worthy cause. The bishop's letter is displayed on the church notice board.

Thank You, Bridget Smith

YEAR OF EVANGELISATION

Today we begin a year of New Evangelisation.

Having considered our own faith more deeply during the last year we will go out from Mass today with a deep commitment to share our faith with those we live with, our friends and neighbours, our work colleagues, those we socialise with, those who have moved away from the practice of their faith and those who have not yet experienced the joy of living in a loving relationship with God.

Where do we start?

Bishop Alan, at a recent meeting of the Council of Laity urged us to reflect on the words often accredited to St. Francis:

'Preach the Gospel at all times. Use words if necessary'

It is worth remembering that it will be through the quality of our lives and our relationships and our LIVING the Gospel that others will be drawn into a life of faith.

This weekend is one of Remembrance

The 11th November, the day the First World War ended in 1918, has by tradition become the day when we call to mind with gratitude those who have died in conflict. King George V first called for a two-minute silence so that: 'in perfect stillness the thoughts of everyone may be concentrated on reverent remembrance of the glorious dead.'

As we join in that stillness, wherever we are, let us also remember those who are engaged in conflict in the war torn areas of our world today and pray earnestly for peace.

Thanks especially to Petra who played the organ, not only on the day but before the day too.

In total after expenses we have made £1,100 towards paying off our building debt.

Thank You

PHIL THE BAG! Monday October 7th

In a joint enterprise with St Felix School we have signed up to a fundraising programme called 'Phil' the Bag which recycles your old unwanted clothing and turns it into cash. We hope you will support our 'Phil' the Bag effort by donating your unwanted textiles in either a bag which will be available at church before the collection date or in any bag and bringing them to church on our 'Phil' the Bag recycle weekend which will be held on Saturday 5th October and Sunday 6th October. Collection at the school on Monday 7th October, morning registration.

The more clothing we collect - adult and children's clothing, shoes, handbags, belts, hats, curtains, towels and bedding - the more money we will receive in exchange. 'Phil' the Bag is also able to accept soft toys, provided they are kept separate from other textiles.

Items will be accepted in any condition - those items that cannot be reused are recycled.

This is the second of our collections this year and the proceeds will be split 50/50 between the school and the Parish, the Parish share will go towards repaying the Church Building debt. The total collection in April weighed over 2 tons and raised £1,153.40. Let's see if we can at least match that this time!

If you usually throw out your unwanted or damaged clothes or have bits and pieces gathering dust in the wardrobe please use them to 'Phil' the Bag!

We may also be able to collect from you if you have donations that you are unable to transport to church, please call Paul Cooper on 07590 902477 to arrange collection.

Why not download the Flyer and give it to your friends and family so that they can join in the as well?

Thank you for your support.

There are 4 ways you can get involved and help raise money to pay off the St Felix Church building loan

Many churches will be open during the day and you can plan your own route and either cycle as part of a group or on your own, visiting as many as you have the energy for! Churches open between 9 a.m. and 5p.m. and a list of participating churches is provided.

2. Come and join the team!!

Fr. Michael is leading a team from St Felix to walk to the churches in Haverhill. The 'St Felix Strollers' intend to start from St Felix Church at 3p.m. and return there in good time for Fr. Michael to conduct his usual Saturday evening duties!

We need volunteers to be at St Felix church to act as recorders and keep the register of visiting cyclists / walkers. Please spare an hour and sign up to the rota available at the back of the church.

4. Sponsor a cyclist, walker or sitter!!!!

If you are unable to take part in any of the activities above we would be grateful for your sponsorship!

Day For Life

This weekend we are holding a 'Day for Life' - Jesus teaches us to care for life because it is in the image of God, who is absolute life; caring for life from the beginning to the end. What an obvious thing. What a simple thing. What a beautiful thing. Yet so often life is put in danger, destroyed and not valued.

This weekend we focus our thoughts on the life of the unborn and the absolute scandal of abortion in this country; the wilful destruction of life itself. On the dignity of the elderly - they have given so much in their lifetime, now it is our turn to give value to their life as it ebbs to a close. Thirdly we care about those who see no hope, no light at the end of the tunnel and seek to take their own life, bringing devastation to those left behind.

Let us pray that we will reject all that contributes to a culture of death and work with others of good will in promoting the culture of life.

Indian cultural evening Saturday 6th July

A wonderful evening was had by all when once again our Keralan community hosted a fundraising evening for the parish in the school hall. The entertainment was first class and the food amazing. We are extremely lucky to have such talent and generosity within our community and owe Shaly Vivian, Jose and 'the community team' a huge debt of gratitude. Since there were so many families involved, we shall rely on Jose to convey the thanks of the parish to everyone.

As well as parishioners, there were also Keralan friends of other faiths who gave of their time, and contributed to the event, so we are doubly blessed! Thank you also to our school community that enabled the event by allowing us to use the hall and to everyone who;

  • helped set up the hall and stage and dismantle it
  • attended and/or sponsored a chef
  • contributed to and bought raffle tickets etc. We raised £771!

Thank you and God bless you all. Sharon Paradine, Chairman of the Fundraising Committee

Church Fayre and Flower Display Raises £800

St Felix Catholic Church summer fayre, held on Saturday was a great success with the sun shining and with the church and Haverhill and District Flower Club raising more than £800, to be shared equally.

The deputy town mayor Cllr Maureen Byrne opened the fayre bringing best wishes from the town council, a major donor towards the cost for landscaping and car parking for the new church.

She thanked the committee and the organisers, stall holders and the flower club for their support to raise funds to pay off the new church loan and asked everyone "dig deep, and let's get this loan paid off".

Cllr Byrne said: "I am delighted that the new church and grounds opened up the location for residents and visitors, and I hope that it will feel more inclusive, with more people getting involved in these local activities."

The highlight of the fayre was a raffle by St Felix church, with prizes totalling more than £400, due mainly to Ron Hefford's sales drive.

The town mayor, Cllr Roger Andre, who attended with his wife Pauline, later drew the names of the lucky winners of seven prizes.

Two winners offered their prizes for auction which fetched £15 for a bottle of champagne and, after a fierce battle between two bidders, the fine bottle of brandy ended up at £40.

After the auction, Cllr Byrne announced the next event in the church fund raising calendar - an evening of entertainment and food from Kerala, India, being organised by parishioners, to be held at St Felix School hall on Saturday 6th July at 7.15pm.

Tickets for the evening can be obtained from Tina Hanks via email from stfelixchurchhaverhill@gmail.com and are priced at £12 for adults and £7 for five to 12 year olds, under fives free. Alternatively telephone the parish office on 01440 702754.

St Steven's Guild of Servers

We are fortunate in our Parish to have several young and dedicated people offering to serve each week at both Masses. However the Albs we have can no longer be maintained. We wish to replace them with black cassocks and white cottas similar to those being worn by Mr Williams and Mr Grace. This will need funding and as we are conscious that the Parish already contribute generously to the Church's building fund the Parish Committee have agreed that instead of an additional collection, the monies contributed to the monthly building fund collection in July will be put towards this one off purchase of new servers outfits for those servers who have completed their years training and have become members of St Steven's Guild. We are always looking for more young people to train to be servers. If you have received your First Holy Communion and would like to become a server please ask Mr Williams or Mr Grace about starting.

Children's News

Congratulations to all those children in our Parish who have received the Sacraments of First Holy Communion and Confirmation during the Feasts of Ascension and Pentecost. A big thanks to all members of our Parish who helped to make these celebrations so special.

Helping our Children Grow in Faith

Preparing our Children to receive these Sacraments needs a great deal of work and help on the part of the Catechist team. We are seeing the numbers of children coming forward to receive these Sacraments increase year on year and we can no longer leave it to one or two members of the Parish to help prepare the children.

We therefore need your help.

We need members of the Parish to help with the preparation sessions for both First Holy Communion and Confirmation. If you would like to help please contact Cindy Batty.

You may also have noticed some changes being made to Children's Liturgy at the Sunday Mass. We are looking to develop how we share our Faith with the Children of our Parish . To begin with we want to be able to run two groups for Children aged 3 to 11 during Sunday Mass. We would also like to run a fun session for an hour after mass on one Sunday in each half term. The first of these will be on Sunday 14th July from 11.15 am and is open to all children from the age of 3 to 15.

So that we can develop our Ideas and help our children develop their faith in an interesting and fun way we need the help of members of the Parish. If you are willing to commit to 1 Sunday a month on a regular basis to help with Children's Liturgy of The Word at Mass, or even to volunteer to be a Leader please contact Cindy Batty. We appreciate this can be daunting but we are putting on a training session for all helpers and leaders on Saturday 13th July at 2.00pm to 4.00pm.

The Year of Faith: reflections in East Anglia

So many good things are happening in our Diocese! We have decided to publish a small booklet to share some of these and celebrate them. We have some ideas about what we might include, but you will have lots more, and we do not want to overlook anything that would be an example or inspiration to others. This will not be news of one-off events, of the kind you would send in for the Diocesan newspaper, but could be something which appears very simple and obvious but it may be only your parish which is doing it!

Please have a look at the questions below and, if there is something you would like to share with us, send us information about it. We cannot promise to include everything in the booklet, but we would be very interested to hear about what is happening.

  • In your view, what does your parish do really well?
  • What makes you proud of your parish community?
  • What new things have started in your parish over the last two years?
  • What would you like to share with others about your parish?
Please send your responses with photos to Dr Dilys Wadman,dco@east-angliadiocese.org.uk

or to St. Felix Council of Laity Rep: Sharon Waters

'Phil' the Bag

In a joint enterprise with St Felix School we have signed up to a fundraising programme called 'Phil' the Bag which recycles your old unwanted clothing and turns it into cash.

We hope you will support our 'Phil' the Bag effort by donating your unwanted textiles in either a bag, which will be available from the back of church before the collection date, or in any bag and bringing them to church on our 'Phil' the Bag recycle weekend which will be held on Saturday 27th April and Sunday 28th April.

The more clothing we collect- adult and children's clothing, shoes, handbags, belts, hats, curtains, towels, and bedding - the more money we will receive in exchange. 'Phi' the Bag is also able to accept soft toys, provided that they are kept separate from other textiles.

Items will be accepted in any condition - those items that cannot be reused are recycled.

The plan is to hold 2 of these collections a year and the proceeds will be split 50/50 between the school and the Parish, with the Parish share going towards repaying the Church Building loan.

If you usually throw out your unwanted or damaged clothes or have bits and pieces gathering dust in the wardrobe, please use them to 'Phil' the Bag.

We may be able to collect from you if you have donations that you are unable to transport to church. Please call Paul Cooper on 07590 902477

Flowers

We hope that the Easter flowers helped you to experience the joy of the feast and that perhaps as you entered the church you were able to feel something of that wonder and awe of those who experienced that first Easter morning.

Flowers can create week by week a silent yet powerful message, creating for us the mood of the season.

We have a small group of flower arrangers: Teresa Spittle, Lily Buckingham, Dave Arnold, Fr. Michael, Annette Field, Anne Barker, Stuart Beaumont and Sharon Waters who work, usually in pairs, on a rota. They design the arrangements, purchase and prepare the flowers and arrange them every week except during Lent.

We are all amateurs...we have learned on the job...discovered skills we didn't realise we had...shared ideas...and enjoyed the satisfaction of what we have achieved.

Most of the flower arranging is an important MINISTRY because through flowers we can help deepen the experience if those who share in the celebration of the Eucharist.

SO...Ladies...and Gentlemen...Please come and join us!

If you feel you would like to learn something about the art of flower arranging and try it for yourself, we have organised a short course - for beginners. Just two sessions to start with.....

Saturday 4th May and Saturday 25th May from 12 noon- 4.00pm £5.00 each session to include Tea/Coffee during the afternoon.

More details and booking forms are available at the back of church.
Places are limited so please do fill in the form and hand it with your fee to Fr. Michael or any of the flower arrangers.

"Thank You from Zambia"

Dear Friend

You will be pleased to know that the first 2 suitcases of "goodies "went over with John Malley the week before Easter and apparently everyone was delighted. John said it was like Children opening presents on Christmas morning! I sent over to 3 separate groups that I had met on my first visit.

  • Sr Quillina Paraffin and the Catholic Women's League
  • The HIV/AIDs Clinic
  • Mama Carols Salvation House Project for the underprivileged(street children)project

Thanks to your generosity I have enough to fill at least 2 more suitcases which will go over in June with John and a group of 6th Form young adults from Norwich.

My family, friends and ex colleagues have also been incredible and with their kindness I am in the process of buying a new school uniform ,underwear etc. for each of the 60 "vulnerable "children in the kindergarten school which will also go over in June.

Once I have received some recent photos from John I will put a notice of the thank you from Zambia on the parish notice board.

All best wishes and thanks. Sharon Paradine - 01440 704502
