There will be a basket beside the crib for donations which, this year, will go to St. Nicholas Hospice Care. Many of you will have known friends and relatives cared for by the Hospice and as their vision for care moves into the community we are so fortunate in being the first town in East Anglia with a 'Hospice Hub' at the Burton Centre. Please visit the coffee shop beside the library and see this amazing place!

You are invited to bring your own dedication to a maximum of one side of A4 which will be displayed at the service. ALL WELCOME

Every so often I am asked how much we should put in the plate when the collection takes place during Mass. In some churches people give a tithe or 10% of their income. This has not been the custom in the Catholic Church. However, our expenses for electricity, gas, insurance and the set amount we are obliged to pay to the Diocese - our levies - to cover retired priests, our Catholic schools and other diocesan expenses, have risen year by year.
The total amount of between £400 and £500 now does not really cover these expenses. Whilst we do not tithe our offerings we do need to ask ourselves how much an hour with God each week, in a warm and well lit and well maintained church is worth? Certainly we should look at our our hourly rate of pay and give something near to that. We perhaps need to ask ourselves how much we spend on our own electricity and gas and house insurance?
Whilst we do not beg for money, the weekly offering is our only source of income.
So - may I suggest we at least look at our givng and in the light of this situation I do hope you will feel able to increase the amount we give each week.
Fr. Michael

As already agreed there will be a mass of celebration for the contribution of the Sisters of Mercy to our Parish and 'thank you and farewell' to Sister Carmel at 10am on Sunday December 7th.The mass will be followed by a reception at St Felix School (to be confirmed) with lunch at 12 midday and everyone is invited and welcome.
We are a very diverse parish, representing all corners of the world and would like to reflect that in the food we share at lunch. Facillities are quite limited so all food should be able to be eaten by finger/fork and can be taken to the hall from 10am onwards on the day.
There is a list of food and drink at the back of the church which we would encourage you to contribute to. It would of course be wonderful to have one of your own signature dishes!
Thanks to your exceptional generosity we have collected over £500 and it intended that we will present Sister with travel Vouchers, a memory book and leaving card with the messages you completed with your donations.

This weekend we celebrate Christ Our King
It is also Youth Sunday and the Liturgy will be led by the children of our Parish The children preparing for their First Holy Communion and their parents will also make their commitment to their preparation at Mass.
Jesus the light of the world
The time between celebrating Christ the King and Candlemas is a time when we reflect on the arrival of the Son of God as a baby and his life as a child on earth to his presentation at the Temple in Jerusalem. To celebrate this time we are asking all children and young people to make a Christingle to bring in to help decorate the church for Christmas.
On Sunday 23rd November, each child will be given a candle and instructions. We ask the children to bring their Christingles to Mass on the 4th Sunday of Advent (21st/22nd December) for a blessing.
First Holy Communion
There is a meeting for all parents this Wednesday 26th November at the School at 7:30pm. The next Children's session is on Saturday 6th December at 3:00pm in the Church.

Dear Friends
As you will know, when Sister Carmel left the parish she asked that much of her furniture and personal possessions would be sold to raise funds for these 2 charities, the first helping bereaved children and the second helping women and children in Zambia affected by HIV and AIDS.
I am pleased to say that due to the generosity of many of our community we have so far raised £849.40. This is an amazing amount and still growing! Could we please remind those who did not have money with them this week to hand it to Sharon P, Sharon C or Joan Hefford as soon as they are able.
There are some unsold items that we intend to sell at the St Felix School Christmas bazaar which is taking place on Friday November 28th - as always the Bazaar is open to everyone in the parish and we would encourage you to support it.
On behalf of Sr Philippa and Sr Carmel, again many thanks for your generosity

It was noticed, by a parishioner, on Sunday that there was some noise from our young children and I know this causes embarrassment to their parents. I love to see our church filled with both young and old and I especially welcome our children. There was no Little Church this week and the whole Mass is trying for them.
Please remember that there are speakers outside the main church and a carpet where children can sit or crawl. The Mass is relayed there so you as parents can watch, listen, and so fully take part in the liturgy. So - don't feel embarrassed, just take them out if they are noisy and let them have more space to express themselves while you enjoy the Mass to the full.

As you are all now aware The Sister of Mercy are sadly withdrawing from Haverhill after 20 years' service to our community and Sister Carmel is retiring to her congregation in Derby. Sister wanted to leave the parish quietly and we have respected her wishes. However such a momentous occasion could not pass without recognition and there is to be a celebration mass dedicated to the Sisters on Sunday December 7th at 10am followed by a reception - details to follow in the coming weeks. This is a very special occasion for the sisters and our parish history and we would like a full church so PLEASE PUT THIS DATE IN YOUR DIARY.
As mentioned some weeks ago we need photos of "camera shy" Sister Carmel to form a memory book which will be presented to her on the 7th. Could you please hand these photos to Fr Michal and once they are scanned they will be returned to you. For anyone who missed the opportunity to contribute to sisters leaving gift there are envelopes at the back of the church with labels for you to write a message for her card.
Thank You

Many thanks to those who returned the parish magazine questionnaires.
We had several suggestions for names/titles, and now need to choose one. Please help by voting, using the sheets in the narthex. Each name/title is displayed on a 'dummy' magazine front cover. Make your choice by sticking a coloured dot on the page next to your chosen magazine name/title. You may select up to 3 different names.
Having got a name for our magazine we now need the content. The deadline for articles and other contributions is October 31st, but please send things before then if you have them ready. Let us have information from parish groups, events occurring around Christmas and beyond, views on parish life, news on parish people; personal prayers, poems, stories and why they are of particular significance to you, recipes, helpful tips - anything that you would like to share with others or think other people may be interested in hearing about - everything will be considered for inclusion. If you contribute something from another publication, please say where it came from, if you know.
Magazine contributions can be sent to:linda.pector@gmail.com or left in the lime green magazine box in the narthex.
To 'happen' the magazine needs you… looking forward to hearing from you.

The Sister of Mercy are moving out of our parish. This means that Sr. Carmel will be leaving us in the near future. The Sisters have been a great support to our parish - certainly without their financial gifts we would not have been able to build our new church.
Sr. Carmel has been a huge support to me - in preparation for my Ordination as a Deacon and as a Priest.
She has worked very hard, often behind the scenes, in the parish and in the prison.
We owe the Sisters a great deal and now reluctantly we have to wish them well as they move on to meet new challenges - a new call to a new vineyard of the Lord.

The morning will provide an opportunity to hear from people from a variety of cultural backgrounds and traditions with the focus on end of life care. Through listening to some short talks and having time for discussion we hope to learn more about the specific needs of those living with life-shortening illness.
This session is open to ALL - it will be particularly helpful for anyone working pastorally or professionally with those receiving care at the end of life. However - you may just be interested in learning about people or even just use this opportunity to come and see our new beautiful HOSPICE IN HAVERHILL at work.
The charge for the training session is £10 and you will be made VERY welcome. To book your place e mail Sharon (sharonlwaters@hotmail.com) or leave your details in an envelope in the parish office clearly marked Hospice Training.

Sincere apologies to those parishioners who ordered copies, for the delay in having them delivered for collection.
The orders should be available for collection after the weekend Masses now. There will be envelopes with the names of those who ordered copies, and the numbers of the photos ordered, together with the quantity. In the envelope of those who are paying on collection, there will be a coin bag.
Please collect your envelope, check the black order file for the order(s) you placed and put a tick against your name in the appropriately numbered page to confirm collection. If you are paying, please put the exact amount in the coin bag and leave in the basket.
The photographer has been paid for the whole order, so I am asking Brendan to please collect the coin bags and keep them separately from other money collected at the church.
I am not in Haverhill at the weekends for the foreseeable future so I am sorry that I shall not be able to attend and distribute the envelopes/collect the money myself. In case of any errors, please email the details to tina@stfelixchurch.org.uk

Together with the other Bishops of England Wales, I shall be celebrating a Solemn Requiem Mass at 8.00pm in the Cathedral in Norwich on August 4th for all those who died during this conflict. We shall also be praying for peace and for the safety of the members of our present-day armed forces.
Following the Mass, there will be a candlelight procession which will leave the cathedral at 9.50pm for the City's War Memorial. There will be a similar procession from the Anglican Cathedral. We will meet the civic dignitaries and there will be an Act of Remembrance.
The Cathedral Garden Cafe and the Narthex will be open from 6.00pm until just before the Mass begins and snacks and other refreshments will be available. As you know parking around the Cathedral is difficult but it will be a lot easier at that time of the evening.
With many thanks and with all good wishes,

This Sunday there will be a collection for Day for Life. This is a day in the Church's year dedicated to celebrating the dignity of life. We are called to protect and cherish life from conception to natural death. This poem is a prayer that helps us unite ourselves to Christ's mother- a Mother of Love for all generations.
Holy Mary, Mother of Love,
holding in your arms, the fruit of your womb,
graciously look upon our earth and remove from it
all that hardens our hearts and dims our eyes
to the preciousness of human life,
from the moment of conception to natural death.
Through the example of your tenderness
teach us the ways of compassion and love
that we may build up the civilisation of love among us
and a society that is truly worthy of the human person.
Help us to reject all that contributes to a culture of death,
and to work with others of goodwill
in promoting the culture of life.
Bring us ever closer to your Son,
so that we may know the fullness of life that he offers us
and come to know that life more perfectly,
with you, and all the angels and saints,
in the eternal life of Heaven.
Amen

Please write before the 18th July to a peer to tell them your views. For more information, including details of how to write to a peer please visit

In a joint enterprise with St Felix School we have signed up to a fundraising programme called 'Phil' the Bag which recycles your old unwanted clothing and turns it into cash. We hope you will support our 'Phil' the Bag effort by donating your unwanted textiles in either a bag which will be available at church before the collection date or in any bag and bringing them to church on our 'Phil' the Bag recycle weekend which will be held on Saturday 7th June and Sunday 8th June 2014. Collection at the school on Monday 9th June, during morning registration.
The more clothing we collect - adult and children's clothing, shoes, handbags, belts, hats, curtains, towels and bedding - the more money we will receive in exchange. 'Phil' the Bag is also able to accept soft toys, provided they are kept separate from other textiles. Items will be accepted in any condition - those items that cannot be reused are recycled.
This is the first of our collections this year and the proceeds will be split 50/50 between the school and the Parish. The Parish share will go towards repaying the Church Building debt. The total collection in April 2013 weighed over 2 tons and raised £1,153.40.
Unfortunately, the amount we receive has been reduced from £500 to £400 per tonne, so we need to collect even more to at least match last year's efforts!
If you usually throw out your unwanted or damaged clothes or have bits and pieces gathering dust in the wardrobe please use them to 'Phil' the Bag!
We may also be able to collect from you if you have donations that you are unable to transport to church, please call Paul Cooper on 07590 902477 to arrange collection.
Thank you for your support.

Looking for authentic Catholic teaching, bored with the one-sided secular media on your television, radio, and online? Then why not tune into EWTN. You will find something of interest for all ages! Parents of young children check out the children's programmes aired after school. If you subscribe to satellite television then you can find the channel under the 'Religion' section.
Alternatively you can access all EWTN programmes at www.ewtn.com. You can even get an 'app' for all smart phone users!
It also serves many useful links to various Catholic websites and has its own UK sections- St Clare Media.

Dear Friends,
I want to sincerely thank everyone in the parish for all their support, care and prayers. I was very blessed during my month in Zambia both in what I was able to achieve, both in terms of the projects I was able to support and the incredible people I met. Most of the people I met and worked with were in desperate need or trying to help those for who life is a daily struggle. Those who had very little themselves were willingly giving their time or sharing what they had with others.
By the time I left for my trip the parish had given me £428 in donations; this together with money from family and friends meant that:
Sister Aquilina Parafin writes from Zambia:
Dear Friends and Parishioners of St Felix Church,
On behalf of Thandizo CommunityNursery,Mothers with babies in Lusaka Prison and the vulnerable in general would like to Thank You most sincerely .for the donations we received through Sharon. All will be given to the needy as indicated.
May God bless you all! We will continue to pray for you and your families.

On the Wednesday of Holy Week I thought of all there was to do over the next few days. I didn't panic! I trusted that everything would fall into place if I trusted not only in God but also in you all - members of our St. Felix community.
My trust was not in vain! Thanks to you all the church was clean, the flowers were beautiful, the chalices were gleaming. The music throughout was very impressive as were the singers, the readers and the ministers of the Eucharist. Servers turned up and worked hard.
Visitors remarked on the welcome they received - so I wish to thank you all however small or large your role. It was the team togetherness that allowed me to get on with my contribution and not worry about the rest.
Thank You
Fr. Michael

We are in need of adult Volunteers to assist Ina Shraeder-Bidwell in facilitating the group. The Youth group is open to all children aged between 13 and 18 but does need support from Adult volunteers to facilitate the group. We also need to have an idea of the numbers of children aged 13 - 18 who would be interested in joining the group along with ideas of what you would like to do at these meetings.
If you are aged 13 - 18 and would be interested in finding out what the Youth group is all about, or if you are an adult who would be interested in helping please put do give your name and contact details either to Mrs Shreader-Bidwell at the Saturday evening Mass or to Mrs Batty on Sunday or to Father Michael.

Last Sunday we held a very successful parish meeting. Whilst I was somewhat disappointed by the number of people who showed interest, the reports from various parish groups showed what an alive and active community we are. I would like to thank all of you for all the hard work you offer to the parish and for all we achieve by working together.

....That by tradition the collection at Easter Masses is our personal gift to our Parish Priest. Many of us have reason to be grateful for Fr. Michael's generous service and it would be so easy to take it for granted in these days of diminishing numbers of clergy and merging parishes, that we have our own priest and one who does not accept a salary form the parish!

Members of the various Parish Groups will present reports on their activities to keep you informed about the work they do in making our Parish such a wonderful community to belong to.
Please put the date in your diaries and make an effort to attend so that you can hear about the things that go on, sometimes behind the scenes, at St Felix and show your support for the work that is done.
There will be an opportunity for you to ask questions and you may even decide to get involved in one of the Groups who will welcome new ideas and volunteers.

Dear Friends
I am writing to THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your generosity and love in supporting me in my return to Zambia. Thanks to your generosity I am able to take 2 digitial blood pressure machines, thermometers, antiseptic cream, plasters and dressings. This will be much appreciated both in the HIV/AIDS clinic and by Sr Aquilina who runs the home based service in the compound where I am staying in Makeni.
In addition, you donated over £200 which I have set aside to spend once I arrive under the guidance of the thrifty and resourceful ladies of the CWLI! Please rest assured I will spend wisely to support children and look forward to returning and showing you just how meaningful your kindness is to these children.
THANK YOU again and please keep me in you thoughts and prayers while I am away. I look forward to returning in time for Easter

We are appealing for more volunteers from Haverhill and the surrounding areas for the Burton Centre.
We are hoping to draft in extra support in advance of the opening of our new outreach centre in the town, which will be up and running in Camps Road in the spring.
Emma Izod, Voluntary Services Manager, said: "With the builders already working on converting the Burton Centre into our first outreach centre, we are behind the scenes ensuring we have a volunteering team ready to go when the building is finished.
"We already have some volunteers signed up, but could really do with a few more. Even if you have just a few hours to spare each week, we would like to hear from you."
Emma is currently looking for volunteers for complementary therapy, reception or coffee shop roles.
For more information, contact Emma on 01284 766418 or email volunteersdept@stnh.org.uk

As you will already have heard the Bishop is coming to Haverhill to consecrate our new church. To mark the occasion we are preparing a History of St Felix Roman Catholic Parish / Church in Haverhill. Work is underway and we are asking anyone who has pictures or memories of Parish occasions / events etc. to please share them with us for inclusion in our presentation. (We will return any photographs loaned to us for the occasion. Please leave any photographs, clearly marked with your name and contact details.).
We really would appreciate everyone's help with this project as we don't have a great deal of time to prepare a fitting tribute to all the work that has gone in over the years to get us to what is the 'first purpose built' Catholic church in Haverhill.
All contributions should be sent by e-mail to tina@stfelixchurch.org.uk or left in an envelope at the back of the church marked for the attention of Tina Hanks by Sunday 2nd February 2014 at the latest.
If you prefer to speak to someone about your memories please contact Tina on 01440 704151 and we will try to reproduce your stories in a suitable format for inclusion.
We plan a short display of the 'story' at the back of the church on the day of the consecration (due to available space). After the event all the information received will be collected into a 'history book' and published in full on the Parish website.
Thank you.

The Department for Christian Responsibility and Citizenship of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales have put a fatsheet together to answer these questions

In our annual effort to boost our Fundraising and reduce our debt Father Michael will be giving tubes of smarties out to parishioners after each mass this week!
As you will recall we raised £1400 in our last "smarties time"
All that is required is for you to eat and enjoy the smarties and over the Lent period replace the smarties with £1 or 20p pieces and return the tube/tubes to Father.
This is a good opportunity for the children to do a "smartie job" and donate the proceeds and for us adults to make a small sacrifice and fill the tube.
Remember you can take more than 1 tube and every penny makes a difference. Thank you all for your continuing support.

There will be a number of visitors to St Felix to celebrate the consecration of our new church and our car park is unlikely to be able to cope with the number of vehicles expected to arrive.
If you are able, we would be grateful if you will consider parking at the rugby club to leave sufficient spaces for our invited guests, some of whom will be unfamiliar with the area.
If you are planning to attend the ceremony and are unable to walk please let me know and we will issue you with a ticket to ensure you are able to use the church car park.
Please also consider car sharing or dropping off passengers at the church and going on to park at the rugby club.
I would also be grateful if you will arrive in good time for the 7 p.m. service and aim to be seated in church no later than 6.45 p.m.

This is a very important source of funds for the parish which costs YOU, the TAX PAYER absolutely NO MORE than you give already in the weekly collection, in our monthly collection to pay off the church debt or in fact ANY 'one off' donations you may make to St. Felix Parish.
So.....if you are a tax payer and have not yet signed up for the Gift Aid Scheme please take this opportunity to do so.
