Weekday Masses

For many years now we have been encouraged to plan for a time when perhaps our parishes would not have a full time priest. In response to this challenge we have established a strong team of Eucharistic Ministers who are already going to the sick and housebound to read the scriptures with them, pray with them and offer them the Eucharist.

While Fr. Michael is away we will try to have as many opportunities for Mass as possible but there will be times when we are without a priest. On these occasions when Deacon Huw or one of the Eucharistic Ministers is available we will continue to meet together to hear the Word of God in the readings of the day and have the opportunity to receive Holy Communion.

PLEASE CHECK THE TIMES OF SERVICES EACH WEEK

Posada

Posada is an old Mexican tradition where Mary and Joseph travelled from house to house asking for a room for the night. We have some beautiful figures of Mary and Joseph on their journey towards Bethlehem when the Son of God, the Son of Mary will be born. We would like families to host these and make their stay an opportunity for prayer and hospitality - maybe as a family or by asking friends to gather to pray.

I hope the figures will visit a new family each day in Advent.

There will be a list, asking you to sign up for a turn. It will be up to you to pass the figures on to the next family.

Hopefully they will be in church each Sunday evening for a time of prayer.

There will be a leaflet containing prayers for use in each home.

A message from Fr. Michael ...

This week I made a return trip to Papworth Hospital for a check-up. The surgeon was pleased with my progress and has discharged me for continued care nearer to home. I am trying to walk the 'mile a day' recommended and hope to return to saying Mass at the beginning of November. I also hope to attend and take part in, the service of healing and the anointing, planned for Sunday 11th October.

My operation has made me realise more fully perhaps, that we are all in need of the healing power of God, not just physically but with the whole of ourselves.

Please continue to keep me in your prayers and I would encourage many of you to come to the service of healing which I am sure will be a great moment of grace for all of us.

Service Of Prayer and Anointing for Healing and Wholeness

11th October 2015, 3:00pm

prayeer and anointment

This service is intended for all of us and all those we know, who would benefit from the reassurance and healing which comes from prayer and anointing through the ministry of the Church.

Suffering is part of our human condition and as we know is not only experienced as physical pain and disability. We are also very much aware of the ways that our mental and emotional well-being is affected by difficult relationships, anxiety and grief.

This service is not only for Catholics or those who have a connection with the parish but anyone who would like to be here and the service will include them all with familiar prayers and hymns.

Please do mention it to your friends and neighbours, encourage them to come and perhaps help them arrange transport if necessary.

The service will be followed by tea and a chance to chat.

SO ... if you are aware of people who intend to come for the service would you please let us know by leaving a message on the parish answer phone - 01440 72156 with your name and the number of people attending OR send an e mail with information to stfelixnewsletter@gmail.com

Message from Fr Michael

Dear All

At last I am at home and able to write to you muself. I wish to say a huge thank you for all the support I have received with cards, prayers and messages over the past month.

I was totally shocked when I received the news that I needed such drastic surgery and felt very alone. Your support enabled me to face the operation and the aftercare I needed.

I am honoured to be part of such a united community.

I have been advsed by the hospital not to resume work for some time but this does not mean that I cannot come to church sometimes.

Once again, my thanks.

Goodbye to Paul and Petra Stephenson

This weekend we say goodbye to Paul and Petra Stephenson . They have both been loyal and committed members of our parish for many years. We have watched with interest, as their family have grown up.

We will miss them but wish them well as they begin a new life in a new parish. Our loss is their gain.

The Diocesan Travelling Cross

The Diocesan Travelling Cross is in our parish and will be here until next Saturday 13th June

Unfortunately people did not sign up for the times offered for Exposition so we have had to change the plan.

There will be adoration on Sunday after the Corpus Christi procession and evening prayer at 6pm, on Tuesday after' evening Mass and also after Wednesday morning mass.

Thursday after mass there will be a special opportunity to pray for the sick and those who receive the Eucharist at home.

Friday there will be a time after the 10.00am mass and also on Saturday morning with the Confirmation Group.

During these times we are asked to pray for vocations, for our young people and for our own personal faith.

Children's Liturgy

There will be two groups with only one leader and helper each week, who will be with the older children. We ask that a parent or older sibling of the younger children accompanies them to share a short bible story avout the gospel reading of the week and help them with their activity.

We value the help and support we get from our adult helpers adn would like to appeal for more helpers to assist us with supervising both groups.

The Catholic Chaplain at HMP Highpoint, Alan McMahon, is setting up a music group at the prison and is in urgent need of a portable electric keyboard. If you have a keyboard that you no longer use and would be willing to donate, please contact Sharon Paradine on 01440 704502 or 07557381914

Also there is a very strong Rosary Group that meets in the prison but those who are keen to take part don't always have rosaries. So... if you have a spare rosary at home please give them to Fr. Michael.

Help the church finances by joining the Gift Aid Scheme...

On 6 April 2015, the new tax year starts which also means that the new gift aid year starts so new envelopes will soon be at the back of the Church for those who are already part of the gift aid scheme. But it is also an ideal time for those of you who are not already part of the scheme to join it. It helps the parish finances so much because, for every £1 that you donate under gift aid, HMRC will give the parish a further 25 pence. You do have to be a UK tax payer to qualify. Please think about joining and, to join, all you have to do is to complete a simple form which are at the back of the Church and give the completed form to Father Michael who will pass it to me.

Bon Voyage

I am sorry to tell you that towards the end of June we are going to lose one of our loyal and committed families.

Paul Stephenson worked tirelessly in pushing forward our plans to build a new church here in Haverhill. Without his dynamic commitment I would have found it almost impossible to move this project on to its completion.

For many years Paul was also Chair of Governors at our school.

He has also dedicated a large part of his life as a doctor here in the town.

Petra, his wife has used her musical talents to enhance our liturgy for many years as well as teaching music at St. Felix School.

Our Christmas, Easter and week by week music has been greatly admired for its high quality, by many of our visitors.

As a parish we shall miss them and their family and we wish them every blessing as they prepare to move on to a new life, new challenges and new commitments.

On 2nd May six of our young Adults: Nicola, Tiffany, Catie, Victoria, Kasper and Tendai joined nearly 200 other young adults from around the Diocese to share in a weekend festival of prayer, workshops, fun, food and music at the Sacred Heart Convent in Swaffham. They and their leaders camped in the grounds of the convent for two nights and then walked 8 miles from Holkham Beech to join the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Walsingham on Monday 4th May.

We hope that this will become an annual event for our young adults. The six who went had a fantastic time despite the cold and the rain. RIGHT TO VOTE

Marriage and the family are the central social institutions that must be supported and strengthened, not undermined. The state helps by enacting legislation which is pro-family. It provides the material infrastructure which all civil life requires. It protects the rights of all its citizens, especially the weakest and the unborn.

A well constructed society will be one that gives priority to the integrity, stability and health of family life. It should be a principle of good government, therefore, that no law should be passed with possible social consequences without first considering what effect it would have on family life and especially on children.

The Common Good and the Catholic Church's Social Teaching Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales

In the past, people had support from their extended families, this has become harder as people become more mobile and as they move, even to different countries, in order to be able to support their families. It is right therefore that the state provides support for people: individuals and families. Candidates' views on supporting the poor and vulnerable are important if they are to represent you.

Right to Vote

In a democracy we have a moral if not a legal duty to vote, which those who live under non-democratic regimes would treasure. We should be careful not to withhold our vote out of indifference, apathy or cynicism, all of which are destructive of the democratic process. The right to vote carries with it a corresponding obligation to exercise that vote responsibly, and so to affirm political leadership as valued and necessary for the common good.

Catholic social teaching: Serving the Common Good (Catholic Bishops' Conference of England and Wales)

I have been guilty of indifference, apathy and cynicism in this regard but have also had the immense privilege of voting in the South African election in 1994 - I wasn't allowed a vote there previously. The document 'The Common Good' provides lots of excellent reasons for not withdrawing from politics and has revived, and challenged, my flagging interest in things political.

Parish Groups

There are other groups of people who work very hard to make our parish as good, as welcoming and as smoothly run as it is.

  1. Welcoming Group - these members hand out books and give a welcome as we arrive at church. Visitors have often remarked on how good this is.
  2. Hospitality Group - These members organise the monthly coffee - we could do this more often with more people. They also cater for Confirmation and other celebrations. Sometimes the Deanery clergy meet here and are treated to a meal. Again they are looking for some new volunteers.
  3. Justice and Peace - This is an important ministry within the Catholic Church and involves working for Peace and Justice in our often unjust and unfair world. The Fair Trade sale each month is part of this mission and run by this group. If you feel you can identify with this group please let me know.
  4. The Group of Cathecists - who run our faith programmes - Children's Liturgy, First Communion and Confirmation classes are always looking for new leaders and helpers.
  5. Liturgy Group - We plan our liturgy, especially when there are extra special celebrations. Liturgy should be a means of lifting our hearts and souls up to God through word, music and action. We often need more people to join us.
  6. Music Group - We are very fortunate in having musicians and singers to lead us at our Sunday Mass and Feast Days throughout the Year. Please think about joining the choir or instrumentalists particularly as we prepare for the Easter services.
  7. Flower Arrangers - Our church is always beautifully decorated with flower arrangements which reflect the Church's year. This is a small group who would love some new talent! They are all people who have learnt 'on the job' and invite you to come and see ... and think about joining the rota. Some training could be arranged.

Pax Christi Peace Sunday - January 18th 2015

Pax Christi

This Peace Sunday, Pax Christi focuses our attention on the message Pope Francis gave the world for World Day of Peace on January 1st

'Slaves no more, but brothers and sisters'

POINTS TO THINK AND PRAY ABOUT

Modern slavery takes various forms and affects people of all ages, gender and races.

  • It may be linked to poverty and indebtedness - causing people to act out of desperation in order to support themselves and their families.
  • It is also linked to conflict, as many are forced by the violence of war to leave everything behind and seek refuge elsewhere. Women and children are also 'enslaved' by the violence of war: abducted and traded as 'spoils' of war, raped, or trained to become child soldiers.
  • Some people are enslaved in work that they consider to be unethical or immoral, such as the arms trade - with little or no alternative.
  • Others are simply 'enslaved' and exploited by those with more power.

'Rosinda' worked for her employers for 3 years before accompanying them to the UK. She often woke with the baby at 5am and would frequently not sleep until after midnight when the employers had gone to bed and she had cleaned up. She shared a room with a 1-year-old baby, was never allowed out, had no day off or holidays... Her employers kept her passport and she knew no-one in the UK. After 3 months in the UK Rosinda found her passport in a pile of documents while cleaning and took this opportunity to run away.

Kalayaan, briefing on domestic workers

If we had a fraction of the faith in you that you have in us

Then this world would be transformed, Lord.

If we showed a fraction of the love that you show to us

Then this world would be transformed, Lord.

If we possessed a fraction of the patience that you display with us

Then this world would be transformed, Lord.

If we shared just a portion of the blessings that we have received from you

Then this world would be transformed, Lord.

If we showed as much trust in others as you have shown in us

Then this world would be transformed, Lord.

If we claimed just a fraction of the power you promised to your Church

Then this world would be transformed, Lord.

Transform us first, Lord, that we might transform this world

Through your love and your power.

Pax Christi Peace Sunday - January 18th 2015

Pax Christi

There will be a retiring collection next week-end to support the work of Pax Christ for:

  • Peace - based on justice. A world where human rights are respected, basic needs are met and people feel safe and valued in their communities.
  • Reconciliation - a process which begins when people try to mend relationships - between individuals or whole countries after times of violence or dispute.
  • Nonviolence - a way of living and making choices that respects others and offers alternatives to violence and war.

Our parish generously supports many worthwhile charities throughout the year. Bearing in mind that a little can make a big difference we wish to remind you that putting odd pennies in the jar in the Narthex throughout the year may be a less onerous way of giving which mounts up. When the coins in the 'Pennies for Peace' jar were banked just before Christmas, there was just over £50 to send to Pax Christi. Thank You.

There are a number of parishioners who, though they are unable to be at Mass with us because of illness or infirmity, regularly receive Communion at home and are supported by the parish. Indeed their prayers are also a great support for us.

Sometimes their needs are long term - for others it may be during a period of sickness and recovery or after a time in hospital.

You are reminded that you should inform Fr. Michael or one of the Pastoral Visitors if someone in your family or a parishioner known to you is admitted to hospital or if you are expecting to be admitted yourself.

The Catholic Chaplaincy teams only know there is someone in need of a visit or to receive communion if they are informed of your admission.

Please also let us know when a parishioner is discharged from hospital so that they can be visited at home for as long as necessary.

The Pastoral Visitors are: George Hatchell, Jean Hatchell, Stuart Beaumont, Sharon Copperthwaite, Sue Arnold, Sharon Waters, Angela Rymills and Sherly Jose.

Dear Parishioners of St Felix,

How can I ever thank you enough for the wonderful celebration I shared with you on 7th December?

What a joy to be present at Mass in the church where we prayed together and later at the school when we enjoyed and shared that wonderful buffet lunch.

I could see and I appreciate there were many who worked so hard to make this day so special. To be leaving Haverhill was one thing but to be saying 'Goodbye' to dear friends of St Felix was not easy.

Father Michael and I had worked together for years and loved every bit of it. However I am grateful that he and all of you gave me memories I shall treasure and an opportunity to work in pastures new which has enriched my life.

Thank you too, for your most generous gifts specially the holiday voucher and all your personal greetings and good wishes. I pray you will enjoy a blessed and peaceful Christmas and that the New Year, 2015, will be filled with success and happiness for each one.

Thank you and God bless you,

Sr. Carmel

HAPPY NEW YEAR - a personal reflection

The first Parish Mass of 2015 took place New Year's Day. It was organised by the Justice and Peace Group as a parish celebration of the 47th World Day of Peace. For me, it was at this point that I really felt a new year had begun. The celebration was simple but prayerful and was well supported by members of our parish, which made it a memorable moment.

On this day each year the Pope delivers a message to the world encouraging the active pursuit of PEACE. I'm not very good at making New Year's resolutions, even worse at keeping them, but I would like to share just a few phrases from Pope Francis' message which struck me and which I hope will have some impact on what I do in this year...

  • 'Resist the temptation to act in a manner unworthy of our humanity.'

  • 'Every person ought to have the awareness that purchasing is always a moral - and not simply an economic - act.'

  • 'Practice small everyday gestures - such as offering a kind word, a greeting or a smile. These cost us nothing but they can offer hope...'

  • 'We know that God will ask each of us: What did you do for your brother?'
